Manor Gardens Lit Quiz Whizzes do it again!

Manor Gardens Primary School, a small public school tucked away behind UKZN in Durban, has done it again by winning the National Kids Literature Championship this year, and all going to plan, will represent South Africa in the World Finals in Auckland, New Zealand in July this year.

 The school’s first team comprising Michaela Crankshaw, Jemma Kasavan, Jaskaran Rajaruthnam and Sam Walker took first position in the national champs held at St David’s in Johannesburg on Saturday, February 24. 

 “This is a wonderful result for our small public school and we are all very proud of our Kids Lit Quiz champions who were up against a number of bigger and more affluent schools,” says Carol Lottering, the principal of Manor Gardens Primary. “We are extremely grateful for the effort and energy that Isobel Sobey, the Media Centre teacher who co-ordinates and coaches the teams, and other teachers at this school who work tirelessly at constantly raising the bar in education, and their incredible ability to instil a love for reading here.”

 Kids Lit Quiz is the brain child of Wayne Mills, a university lecturer from New Zealand, who came up with the concept twenty-seven years ago. He calls it “The Sport of Reading”.  He developed the quiz to promote reading for pleasure and to reward good readers in the same way that sports stars are rewarded by their schools and communities. The first quiz took place in 1991.  In that first year 14 teams took part. Today it has grown into a hugely popular annual event spanning five continents with +/- 20 000 children participating in heats throughout the year.   

“The team will be up against tough competition from China, United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia,” explains Isobel Sobey.  “The four members in our team are all on Grade 7 and are avid readers with deep interest in books.  They have read and worked hard for this since Grade 1 and are deserving winners. They will have a wonderful time in New Zealand and soak up all the lessons and experiences that come their way.” 

 “Now we begin the hard work of intense coaching for the international event, as well as fundraising to help the children reach an amazing goal,” she explains. “The Kids Lit Quiz organization in New Zealand covers accommodation, meals and activities for the teams but transport to the World Final is not covered. So we are gratefully accepting any and all donations or fundraising ideas to cover the travelling costs for the four team members and two adult coaches. We estimate these costs to be in the region of R100,000. As the school is a registered Public Benefit Organization (tax reference 930000373) it can provide receipts for tax purposes for donations of R1000 or more.”

SPAR KZN School Girl's Hockey Challenge - Glencoe

Kicking off the first tournament in the eighth year of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge, the defending champs, Ferrum Hoërskool managed to retain their title in the Northern KZN Regional that took place at Sarel Cilliers High School in Glencoe.

Ferrum took on Pionier in the gold silver medal game. In a tough duel, Ferrum netted the winning goal with 11.5 minutes on the clock. The only goal scorer in the main game, vice-captain, Lucretia Struwig found the net in free play after a frenetic build up with the ball sneaking past the keeper. Struwig had a good attacking tournament, setting the tone with scoring the first goal in the tournament and then following on taking her team through in the semi-finals with the only goal scored early in the game against Sarel Cilliers. 

Pionier started off in a determined fashion but sadly ran out of steam once the Ferrum ball hit the back of their goal. Having had a sterling build up to the finals, the team topped their pool with three impressive wins, and 13 goals in their three games. They met St Dominics in the semi-final winning that game 1-0, taking them into their second successive final.

Pionier’s coach K.J. Ewert said that the girls did their school proud in the tournament and were obviously disappointed at not being able to eclipse Ferrum High’s winning streak. “They played extremely well to have got into the finals of this regional, and it was a good opportunity for us, but unfortunately it was not to be. The good score card will show that it was a heavily contested regional,” he said.

In a feisty replay of last year’s final where Ferrum managed a 2-1 win against Pionier reclaiming their stronghold in this region. A determined outfit took to the field in this year’s SPAR KZN tournament where Ferrum surged forwards but were unable to break the quietly determined Pionier defense barring their tournament-winning goal. 

Dean Bond, Ferrum’s coach, delighted with his team’s win said “There were big expectations for Ferrum as defending champs. We had lost 8 players from last year’s team, so we knew we had to work hard for it.  But it was a total team effort. We put in the hours and the results have paid off. The girls really played with their hearts on their sleeves in this incredible heat.”

For the first time in the history of the tournament, St Domimics finished on a podium step, having defeated one-time winners Sarel Cilliers for the bronze title. St Dominics ended their 2018 tournament with a 2 nil victory against the host school.

Nine schools took to the field participating in the sweltering northern KZN heat, with Pool A consisting of Ferrum in first, St Dominics, third placed Dundee, Vryheid High and Pongola and Pool B with Pionier, Sarel Cilliers, Newcastle and Vryheid Landbou.

The first umpire in the eighth tournament to be awarded Most Promising Umpire, Piet Retief resident Mia Steenkamp representing Pionier has been invited to further her umpiring career at the Grand Finals at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof in July.

The next tournament takes place on 10 March with the first of the Pietermaritzburg tournaments, the PMB Central, followed by the PMB Northern Regional on the next day.

SPAR KZN School Girls' Hockey Challenge 2018

Rolling into its eighth year, the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge kicks off in Glencoe, at the end of February 2018 with the first of ten regional tournaments.

One time winners, Sarel Cilliers will host the first regional at their school on Saturday 24 February. An anticipated 12 schools are expected to battle it out, including six time winners, Ferrum High School from Newcastle.

In previous years, the Pietermaritzburg Central and Pietermaritzburg Northern regionals were held on the same day, however, this year both these regions will have their own day in the sunshine.

The only newcomers to the Grand Finals last year, St John’s DSG will have home turf advantage as they defend their PMB Central Regional title on 10 March. The following day, St Anne’s College welcomes the teams participating in the PMB Northern Regional to their picturesque grounds. No stranger to the Grand Finals, St Anne’s will also have home ground advantage, having won their regional six times.

Heading to the first of the Durban and surrounds regionals, St Henry’s hosts the Durban Central Regional at the 3 Schools Trust on Saturday 17 March. This tournament has been dominated by Durban Girls’ College, the only team in the tournament’s history to have a 100% record.  

Kuswag hosts the Durban South Regional on completely neutral territory at the 3 Schools Trust Astro on Sunday 25 March. Kuswag School has previously participated at the Grand Finals and will be keen to make an appearance, releasing the stronghold Amanzimtoti High School have had on the region.

The sixth regional takes place after a two week break with Reddam College hosting the Durban North Regional at their school on Sunday 15 April. Our Lady of Fatima will be defending their title, having won this title in the first tournament, and again last year. They will be keen to hold out previous winners Ashton and Danville.

The tournament then travels to the outlying areas. On Saturday 21 April former defending champs, Kokstad College will host the Southern KZN Regional at their school. Three teams have raised the trophy in this region, with current defending champs and three times winners, King Edward High School taking on rivals, Kokstad College and Creston College who have both twice travelled to the Grand Finals.

Returning to Durban, and certainly the feistiest of the regional tournaments, the Highway Regional will be hosted by Westville Girls’ High School on Sunday 6 May. In 2014, Westville managed to topple St Mary’s DSG in a thrilling game where they won 2-1. Saints have dominated the region, winning it six times and adding to their impressive successes, they are also the overall 2017 Grand Finals tournament winners.

Travelling inland for the second last tournament, Wartburg Kirchdorf will defend their title at home on Saturday 12 May, hosting the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional.

Finally, the last regional will be competed in Richards Bay for the North Coastal Regional. Defending champs, Grantleigh will host the tournament again, on their magnificent turf, just outside of Richards Bay. The tournament takes place on Saturday 19 May concluding the ten KZN Regionals.

Once all the regional winners have been crowned, they will each travel to the action packed Grand Finals that takes place at St Mary’s DSG on 20 and 21 July.

QUEUEING UP TO BLOW THE WHISTLE AT THE GRAND FINALS - Haylea Heyns

Queuing up to umpire at the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Tournament in Kloof later this month, 23-year-old Dundee High School old boy, Qiniso "Que" Mdletshe,prepares himself to blow the whistle at the Grand Finals. 

The tournament, which is in its seventh year, travelled to 10 regions around KZN and saw almost 80 high school girls’ first teams battle it out on the astro. At each of the regionals an up-and-coming young umpire was selected, and Mdletshe, representing Northern KZN, was one of the “Most Promising Umpires” to be invited to referee at the Grand Finals. 

Mdletshe’s passion for hockey ignited at Uelzen Primary when he first started playing mini hockey in Grade one.  He went on to play in the first team at Dundee High School, and then at Varsity College Durban North where he was awarded Second Team Player of the Year. This was the last time he was on the field as a player. He has since been umpiring for over two years. This is his debut at the Spar KZN School Girls’ Tournament. Mdletshe says that he “misses playing hockey, and that it is unfortunate that we don't have enough teams in our area to form a league because it is a beautiful sport.”

As an umpire, Mdletshe likes to encourage fair play and a good game flow, being sure to only interfere and disrupt play when absolutely necessary and striving for his refereeing decisions to be thorough and consistent. He maintains his physical fitness by jogging almost everyday (except Sundays). 

Off the field, Mdletshe likes reading books about “success stories” and playing social soccer, cricket and table tennis. He wants to complete his Diploma in Sports Management and dreams of perhaps oneday studying further – this time it would be teaching at either UKZN, UCT, or NWU Pukke.

The sixth regional of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge sees nine Durban Central Schools’ battling it out for the honours at the 3 Schools Trust Astroturf on Sunday, March 26,

Winners of last year’s central regional, Durban Girls’ College will no doubt be going all out to defend their title, having owned this space since the inaugral tournament in 2011 and have won gold in the Grand Finals three times in a row in 2013, 2014 and 2015, with two silvers in 2012 and 2016 and a bronze in 2011.

Joining them on the astro next Sunday will be Maris Stella, St Henry’s, Durban Girls’ High School, Hoërskool Port Natal, Inanda High School, the INK team, a combined team of players from the Inanda, KwaMashu Ntuzuma districtsand two newcomers to the tourney, Durban Girls Secondary and Rossburgh High.

The regional, which is hosted by Durban Girls’ High, will be played in two pools, with each game lasting 20 minutes.

“This is always an exciting regional to watch, as there are some strong teams with healthy competitive spirits determined to claim the title.” says Tournament Director Les Galloway.  “We are particularly pleased to welcome both the INK and Inanda teams back, and we welcome the Durban Girls’ Secondary and Rossburgh High teams to their first regional. This tournament is a fantastic example of how the enthusiasm of the game can spill over to other schools and encourage them to offer hockey as an extra-curricular sport and help to grow the sport.”

“We are always thrilledto welcome new blood to the tournaments, as it provides an opportunity for the teams to meet with new schools, new styles of playing and new challenges,” says Max Oliva, MD of SPAR KZN. “This tournament promises some exciting games, and if any of the other regionals are anything to go by, we are not only in for a fantastic sporting festival, but a wonderful opportunity to meet with like-minded sports lovers, and enjoy the social connections these tournaments offer.”

The winners of this regional will go through to the Grand Finals at St Mary’s DSG in July and will join Amanzimtoti winners of Durban South regional, St John’s DSG (Pietermaritzburg Central) and St Anne’s (Pietermaritzburg North), Ferrum (Northern KZN) and the winner of the Durban North regional which takes place at Crawford La Lucia on Saturday, March 25.

Seven teams will be taking to the turf to participate in the Durban North Regional of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge on Saturday 25 March at Crawford La Lucia.

It will be an early start to the regional, with the round robin games getting underway just after 7am. Teams will be playing in one direction in short 18minute burst games with the two top teams battling it out at the end of the day in the regional final.

Defending champions Ashton International College will be keen to reclaim the title for the fourth time in the seven years’ history of this tournament. Challenging them will be host school, Crawford College La Lucia together with Crawford College North Coast, Danville Park Girls’ High School, Our Lady Fatima DCS and Reddam House uMhlanga.

Previous winner, Danville Park (2012 and 2014) would like to have their name engraved on the trophy for a third time. And if Fatima’s feisty spirit is anything to go by, they too would love to lift the trophy for the second time, having taken the regional title in the inaugural tournament in 2011.

Tournament Director, Les Galloway said, “We are in for an exciting day of hockey at this regional. I have chatted to a number of the coaches and it appears that after a fantastic indoor season, the schools are raring to go with a number of teams eyeing out the regional trophy.”

Continuing, Galloway enthused, “What is also uplifting for the tournament, we have three new teams participating this weekend. We welcome Reddam House uMhlanga to the Durban North Regional and wish them well as they take to the turf. And two new teams that will participate in the Durban Central Regional, we welcome Rossburgh High and Durban Girls Secondary.”

MD for SPAR KZN, Max Oliva said, “The long-term weather forecast is looking a bit damp, but I guarantee the weather will not deter from any of the action expected on the turf! In the four previous tournaments, this year, we have been in awe by the big hearts that have stepped onto the fields. The sportsmanship displayed has been admirable, and I look forward to seeing more of this throughout the challenge!”

At the conclusion of the 22 games, the Durban North Regional will reveal the fifth team who will go through to the Grand Finals that takes place at St Mary’s in July. Four teams have already secured their berth at the tournament, Ferrum High School (Northern KZN); St John’s DSG (PMB Central); St Anne’s College (PMB North) and Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South).

The SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge welcomes back St Anne’s and a new team, St John’s DSG to the Grand Finals that will be held in July, as both teams were crowned regional champions in the 2017 Pietermaritzburg tournaments.

Ending Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High’s dominance in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional, St John’s DSG toppled their 100% record when they beat them 1-0 in a riveting game in the round robin at Epworth College. Striker for St John’s DSG, Lise le Roux knocked in the all-important, only goal against the Green Machine, securing her teams place in the Grand Finals.

Coach for the Yellow Sticks, Lyndal ‘Binks’ Robertson stated, “The girls attitude today was what won us the tournament. They were phenomenal! The group of girls we have, have done well in other sports this term and this filtered onto the turf. I see great potential for our small school with such a big heart. We are trying to instil the mantra of ‘love what you do, love the game’ and this was evident on the pitch. All the players contributed, and the pace going forward resulted in some exciting goals.”

Continuing, ‘Binks’ said, “Luck was on our side, there were strong contenders in both tournaments, and it could have gone either way. For us against GHS and Epworth, we happened to connect earlier as a team. Those big hearts managed to put the ball in the back of the box, and that made the world of difference. On the field, we defended well and when we got to the other end of the field, we capitalised. And now, for the first time, we are heading to the Grand Finals. Everyone is so delighted.”

Retaining their Pietermaritzburg North regional title for the sixth time, St Anne’s had a bit of a yo-yo day on the turf at UKZN Pietermaritzburg, starting off with a win against long-time rivals, The Wickham Collegiate. Their second game, the defending champs were held to a 2 all draw against hosts, Hoërskool Voortrekker in a hard fought 25-minute tussle. St Anne’s then defeated Grace College 3-0. In their final game, Saints took on surprise package of the day, Treverton who had a phenomenal tournament and at one stage looked promising to possibly advance through to the Grand Finals. Saints lifted their game, leaving Treverton unable to stop them as they netted three solid goals.

Coaching the northern Saints for the fourth year, former SA Men’s coach Carlos Pereira enthused, “It was a great day for us. We played some nice hockey and passed the ball around well. We had good control in games, and a couple of patches where we let in goals. We were fortunate that our goals for us were stronger than where we let goals in today. But it was a good lesson, we know where we need to improve and where we need to work. But as I said, it was a great day of hockey overall!”

At each tournament, an umpire is recognised as the Most Promising Umpire, two umpires were acknowledged. For the second time, Sibusiso Ndlovu, a scholar from Voortrekker High was recognised for his umpiring abilities. Joining his is uber cool, Alana Marais representing Howick High School. Marais displayed superb levels of calm in all aspects of her game.

Speaking at the prize giving, Tournament Director, Les Galloway said, “A hearty congratulations to the twelve teams that took part in our tournament today! The action, both on and off the pitch was fantastic. I believe that everyone had an marvellously, enjoyable time. Your schools can be very proud of the way you represented them.”

MD for SPAR KZN, Max Oliva said “I salute you all. It is wonderful to see the camaraderie both on and off the pitch. Players having taken each other on, embrace each other in a friendly hug on the side-lines. This is the true meaning of sportsmanship and I am delighted to witness this!”

Two more teams have been decided for the Grand Final, St Anne’s College and St John’s DSG join Ferrum in July. Ten regional champions will meet at the Grand Finals that takes place at St Mary’s DSG.

For the third time in a row, the first hockey team from Amanzimtoti High School raised the trophy as the Durban South Regional champions in the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge.
It was anyone’s trophy going into the last game of the round robin, with the statisticians working hard double checking the points. As the final whistle blew, Kuswag Skool had a guaranteed place in the final and a penalty shootout was required to decide on the second team, taking to the field for a Toti duel were Kingsway High School and the defending champions, Amanzimtoti.
Kingsway took the first attempt with Leoni de Beer meeting the full force of brave keeper, Nomcebo Maseko who charged out and met her at the top of the circle. Youngster, Mvelo Mthombeni from Amazimtoti slotted in her attempt putting the score to 0-1 after the first round. Kingsway’s second attempt was reawarded as Maseko overzealously played the ball outside the circle. On the retake, Nosipho Mngadi levelled the score for Kingsway. 14-year-old Anani Xozwa chance was thwarted as she found the courageous Teneze Csouros.
At the end of the second round, the score was one a piece, Erin Main managed to avoid a flying Maseko, with an open goal tempting her, her shot went agonisingly wide for KHS. Captain for Amanzimtoti, Phiwo Myeza took to the spot and fired in her shot, with the ball floating over the cross bar. The decider then went to a sudden death. Mngadi put her hand up and stepped up to the spot, she found the right boot of a charging Maseko with the ball flying out of the circle. The captain, Myeza then determinedly found the back of the net in her attempt, taking her team into the final.
Coach for Amanzimtoti High School, Shanna Hughes said, “Phiwo came up to me after she missed her first attempt and ensured me, ‘Don’t worry Ma’am, I’ve got this and she did. She also scored the goal in the final, leading by example!”
The quick fire twenty-minute final between Kuswag and Amanzimtoti had loads of action in the middle of the field. Myeza managed to capitalise on an opportunity, finding the back of the box for the only goal. Kuswag, however never gave up and as the clock ticked down, their urgency increased but they were just unable to penetrate the impressive defence from Toti.
Continuing, Hughes stated, “What a hectic day, typical Toti girls, there was no sailing through for us! It had to be nail biting! Murphy’s law, our first game in any SPAR tournament is always a draw and we drew against Grosvenor. We have a very good team, and they are very intuitive, they shift together, and do what they need, together!”
“Our goalie is amazing, she has no hassle charging out of her box. It took a brilliant team effort. All around, with all the girls’ we really wanted it. It was an awesome day, the atmosphere was brilliant.”
Coach for Kingsway High School, Lloyd Jones said, “Everything went right for us. We had quite a few young ones and they put their hands up! The day before we participated in the Scottburgh tournament and we go beaten, physically and on the scoreline. It was a hard day, knowing we had six tough games today we pulled in some U16s. My player of the team was most certainly Nosipho, who didn’t shy away from any challenge!”
Chatting about the penalty shootout, Jones surmised, “Look, we are new to 8 second penalties so didn’t quite know what to do. I asked the girls if any of them wanted to try and the youngsters put up their hands and impressed me no end! My whole team did. We try to look for the silver lining, we won the lucky draw and everyone was so chuffed with that!”
In each region, an umpire is recognised for his or her abilities and is awarded the Most Promising Umpire prize. At the Durban South Regional umpire Kalvin van Rensburg representing Kingsway High School shone with the whistle and took the honours of the M.P.U. this year.
MD for SPAR KZN, Max Oliva stated, “In the blustery, hot conditions the action on the turf kept turning up a notch as the day wore on! Thank you to Grosvenor Girls’, Kingsway, New Forest, Queensburgh Girls’ High, Werda and of course, our two finalists, for coming down and putting on such a wonderful display of hockey. Well done to all!”
Amanzimtoti takes the fourth berth at the Grand Finals and join St John’s DSG and St Anne’s who both earned their place on Saturday at the Pietermaritzburg Regionals. The three teams will be accompanied by Ferrum who were crowned the Norther KZN Regional in Pongola

First girls’ hockey teams from around Maritzburg and surrounds will be taking to the pitch on Saturday 11 March to compete in the hotly contested derby for the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge.

The 12 schools taking part are divided up into the Pietermaritzburg North and Pietermaritzburg Central Regionals, with each regional having six teams. Epworth College and Hoerskool Voortrekker host the two tournaments concurrently. Epworth will host the tournament on their turf, and Voortrekker utilising the neighbouring turf at UKZN.

Holding a 100% record for the central tournament is Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High first. St Anne’s College from Hilton are the defending champions for the northern regional. Having dominated their regional, the team in blue have hoisted the trophy an impressive five out of six times in the seven years of this tournament. 

Saints will meet some strong competition in their hunt for a sixth title. They will take on hosts Voortrekker, The Wykeham Collegiate who have progressed through to the Grand Finals once, Treverton, Alexandra and Grace College. 

Under the guidance of a new coaching staff, the Green Machine are hoping to retain their fantastic record but will have a tough task as they are up against host school Epworth, Howick High, St John’s, Russell High and Maritzburg Christian School.

Both these regionals will be played in round robin format with 25 minute games, with a change over at half time.

“We are looking forward to a real festival of hockey this weekend, which will be packed with action and loads of fun,” says Tournament Director, Les Galloway. “Now in our seventh year, the tournament continues to provide opportunities for young talent to hone their skills. To be able to play against a number of schools, and learn from skills and techniques of other players, is hugely beneficial to growing the game.”

MD for SPAR KZN, Max Oliva says, “We wish all the players best of luck for these regionals, and although there is a focus on the game of hockey, we invite everyone to have fun and enjoy the spirit of playing with like-minded peers.”

The winners of these regionals will join Ferrum High School from Newcastle from who recently won the Northern KZN Regional, along with six other teams still to be decided from around KwaZulu Natal at the Grand Finals that will be hosted at St Mary’s DSG in July.

SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge Big Derby Weekend for Hockey

Pietermaritzburg- North and Central and Durban South Regionals

Next weekend, is a big derby weekend for hockey. Three hotly contested regionals will be played in the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge – both Pietermaritzburg North and Central Regional and the Durban South Regional.

Kicking off the second and third regionals on Saturday March 11, are the two Pietermaritzburg regionals running concurrently: The North is hosted by Hoërskool Voortrekker at UKZN, and the Central is hosted by Epworth College and takes place on home turf. Then on Sunday, March 12, the Durban South Regional, hosted by Hoërskool Werda takes place at the Three Schools Trust in Glenwood, Durban.

The Pietermaritzburg North Regional will no doubt see defending champions and five times winners St Anne’s and third in last year’s Grand Finals, aiming to hold onto the honours. Always a strongly contested regional other schools participating include Wykeham Collegiate, Treverton, Alexandra High School, Hoërskool Voortrekker and Grace College.

The Central Regional’s defending champs and six times winners Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High will be working hard to retain their 100% record against Howick, Epworth, St John’s, Russell High and Maritzburg Christian School.
Both these regionals will be played in round robin format with 25 minutes games, with a change over at half time.

The Durban South will also be played in round robin format and games last 20 minutes one way. Participating schools include regional winners and defending champs Amanzimtoti High who have raised the regional trophy twice, Kingsway High School, Kuswag Hoërskool, New Forest High School, Queensburgh Girls’ High School, and Hoërskool Werda.

“We are looking forward to a real festival of hockey this weekend, which will be packed with action and loads of fun,” says Tournament Director, Les Galloway. “Now in our seventh year, the tournament continues to provide opportunities for young talent to hone their skills. To be able to play against a number of schools, and learn from skills and techniques of other players, is hugely beneficial to growing the game.”

The winners of these regionals will join Ferrum High School from Newcastle from who recently won the Northern KZN Regional, along with six other teams still to be decided from around KwaZulu Natal at the Grand Finals that will be hosted at St Mary’s DSG in July.

Ferrum High Claims Back Regional Title in SPAR KZN

It was a day that young hockey players had to really dig deep to sustain their games in sweltering heat in the first of the regionals in the 2017 SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge which saw Ferrum High School reclaim the Northern Regional title.

Defending champions Sarel Cilliers were unable to hold onto the cup, which they scooped from Ferrum last year, who have now been crowned champions six times in this region.

Participating teams included Newcastle High School, Ferrum High School and St Dominics also from Newcastle, Utrecht High School, Dundee High School, Vryheid High School, Pionier High School (Vryheid) and Pongola Akademie. 

The twenty-four minute games, were played in two pools with Ferrum topping the log of Pool A, meeting Pool B runners-up, host school Pongola Akademie in the first semi-final. The second semi had Pool A’s Pionier taking on Dundee, who topped Pool B.

Dundee were outright winners of their pool finishing their three games with 10 points having drawn against Pongola in the pool game. Pongola were two points behind them having drawn two of their games. 

Ferrum were clear dominators having won all of their games. The battle for second place was down to the wire with Sarel Cilliers and Pionier equal on nine points. The deciding factor was goal difference, and Pionier had to score more than two in their final game against Newcastle.

Pionier’s centre forward, Lara Dedekind, stormed down the middle of the field smashing a shot from the top of the circle landing their second needed goal in their last match to secure their place in the semis. Inspired by success the team continued to net another four more goals taking the final score to 6 – 0.

The first semi saw Pongola taking on Ferrum with Ferrum scoring their goal in the first half, and Pongola defended valiantly throughout the remainder of the game only having a few opportunities at the other end which they were not able to convert.

In the second semi-final, Dundee met Pionier for the first time in over a decade, and Dedekind netted another two for her team in between goals landed by team mates Johanette Wilken and Anlie Knoetze.

In the blazing sun, Pionier and Ferrum met for the finals with evenly matched play, as both sides had opportunities on either end. Earlier on in the day the two teams that had battled it out with Ferrum conquering Pionier 2-1. 

As the clock wound down in the final, left wing Lucrecia Struwig managed to beat the last line of the opposition’s sterling defense – goalie Lorma Janse van Rensburg to nudge the ball in. In the last minute of play, Pionier fought courageously being awarded with back-to-back short corners but were unable to equalize.

Captain of the winning team Sanelisiwe Mnguni, elated with the win said “We had to really work hard and persevere, especially when our energy levels were really low, but we held onto our motto Believe, Motivate and Communicate to get us through.”

The Most Promising Umpire was Que Mdletshe, representing Dundee High School.

The SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge moves north this weekend when the first regional of the seventh annual tournament takes place in Pongola on Saturday, February 25.

Hosted for the second time by Pongola Akademie, the regionals sees nine first team girls’ schools battling it out for the prized title in what promises to be a strong regional. Schools participating including defending champions Sarel Cilliers (Glencoe, Umzinyathi), Newcastle High School, Ferrum High School and St Dominics also from Newcastle, Utrecht High School, Dundee High School, Vryheid High School, Pionier High School (Vryheid) and Pongola Akademie. 

Defending champions Sarel Cilliers, who made their maiden appearance at the finals in Durban last year, having scooped the honours from five times northern regional champions Ferrum High, will no doubt be determined to hold onto their title, with Ferrum eager to claim it back.

Twenty-five minute games with two pools will be played on two fields with the winners of the pools going into a semi-final format. In Pool A are Pionier, Ferrum; Vryheid, Sarel Cilliers and Newcastle, and in Pool B Utrecht, Dundee, Pongola and St Dominics.

The tournament not only aims to support the development of the players, but also that of the umpires. Each school brings their best umpire to represent them on the day and at the end of each regional, one umpire is recognized as the “Most Promising Umpire”.

“Seven years down the line, and we continue to enjoy watching the impact that this tournament has on developing the game in the province,” says Tournament Director, Les Galloway. “There is definitely an increased interest in the game not only from the players perspective but also from the schools and the supporters point of view. We have seen more astroturfs being installed in the province, and a growing spectator base – all boding well for the increased support on all levels for the game.”

St Mary’s DSG: 23 & 24 July

The wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits, or the action at the Grand Finals of this year’s SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge with St Mary’s DSG taking the win in determined fashion on their home turf.

Meeting the defending champions, the host school St Mary’s took on Durban Girls’ College in the gold silver game. After thirty minutes of superb flowing play, with both teams sharing equal possession, the score was level on nil nil with the 2016 winner being decided in a penalty shoot-out. 

First to go were College, missing their 8 second penalty. Leah Piggott representing Saints was first in line for her team and didn’t manage to capitalise on College’s miss. The final four rolling penalties went Saints way, with College unable to penetrate Sarah Cromie’s solid presence in goals in their two attempts. Vice-Captain for St Mary’s DSG, Tegan Fourie put the first points up on the board, followed up by Kiana Cormack slotting in her team’s second.  The final score was 2-0 to Saints. 

The two giants of the tournament had met earlier in the pool games with Saints managing to win that game 1-0 with their feisty Vice-Captain netting the all-important goal. In their fifth appearance of the tournament, this is the second time St Mary’s DSG have won. Their first time was in 2012, also tallying up a bronze in 2011 and 2013 and a fourth place last year.

It was not to be for Durban Girls’ College. In their sixth appearance, College were hoping to make this their fourth title in a row, with gold in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The team representing the Durban Central Regional ended their pool games second behind St Mary’s, but tied on points with the hard-working team from King Edward High School. Both College and King Edward finished the pool games on 9points with College advancing to the final having scored more goals. 

In the bronze medal game, it was a Pietermaritzburg derby with St Anne’s and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High duelling it out on the astro. In their second meeting of the tournament, St Anne’s managed to clinch the win to claim bronze. In their first meeting, captain for St Anne’s, Julia Saulez found the back of the net to put her team 1-0 up in an exciting conclusion to the Pool B games. 

After half an hour in the bronze final, the whistle went for full time with the score sitting on nil nil. Both teams first attempts didn’t manage to find the back of the net, with Girls’ High second attempt also not troubling the scorers. St Anne’s Daniella Rhodes put her team one up with her penalty shot. Levelling the scores for Girls’ High, Nandi Ngubane gave her team a chance. With the pressure on, St Anne’s Steph Wenke got shut down by goalie, Nox Manele with the score now level. 

The game moved on to sudden death with St Anne’s Captain Julia Saulez leading by example and scoring. Then vibrant keeper for St Anne’s, Megan Rebstein-Dovey rose to the occasion, not allowing the first and final shot in the sudden death to pass her, giving her team the title of bronze winners.

Rob Philipson, MD for SPAR KZN stated, “After 29 games this weekend, 160 young ladies can be extremely proud of themselves for their achievement. Each and every one of the players battled the chilly weather and did so superbly. They not only represented their school, but their region with great pride and grace. Well done ladies to your successes at this wonderful tournament.”

A new initiative this year was the inclusion of a hockey bursary by Varsity College. With the decision being extremely difficult this year, the college awarded two bursaries. The announcement was made at the prize giving, with the recipients being invited to study and play for Varsity College. The two bursary winners were Tegan Fourie from St Mary’s DSG and Courtney Slaney from Westville Girls’ High School.

At the prize-giving, Tournament Director, Les Galloway said, “Ladies, you entertained us this weekend with a display of phenomenal skill and talent on the turf. To St Mary’s DSG, well done on your win. I believe, looking at the score lines, the standard of hockey is certainly improving in our province. A team like King Edward played impressively keeping hockey playing school, College to a draw. Another outlying school, Wartburg also impressed, giving it their absolute all this year. It is a joy to see our great game of hockey winning at the end of the day!”

Grand Finals at St Mary’s DSG: 23 & 24 July

With two weeks to go until the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge, ten teams are hard at work preparing for the tournament on 23 and 24 July. 

The teams that have made it through to the Grand Finals, having won their regionals, are Amanzimtoti High School (Durban South); Ashton International College (Durban North); Durban Girls’ College (Durban Central); Grantleigh College (Northern Coastal); King Edward High School (Southern KZN); Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (Pietermaritzburg Central); Sarel Cilliers (Newcastle); St Anne’s College (Pietermaritzburg North); St Mary’s DSG (Highway) and Wartburg Kirchdorf (Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi).

“The fixtures for the finals have been consolidated into one venue i.e. St Mary’s DSG as opposed to two venues in previous years.” stated Tournament Director, Les Galloway.

Continuing, she said, “With only one venue being used, the vibe should be great with all the 10 teams being able to watch and support all matches and, together with all of their supporters, it should make for a very festive weekend!”

The finals will kick off with pool games on Saturday and cross pool games, play-offs and the medal games on Sunday. A new scoring system will be used to calculate positions on the logs. A win will be awarded four points, a draw with goals equates to two points, a goalless draw amounts to one point and a loss zero points. Pool games will be 20minutes long and the play-offs will be half an hour with a change of sides at fifteen minutes. 

In Pool A, defending champions Durban Girls’ College take on host school, St Mary’s DSG, newbies Sarel Cilliers High School, King Edward High School and Grantleigh High School. In Pool B, last year’s silver medalists Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School make their sixth appearance and this year will take on St Anne’s DSG; Ashton International College; Amanzimtoti High School and Wartburg Kirchdorf High School. 

MD for SPAR KZN, Rob Philipson said, “We look forward to the finals this year, welcoming both old and new players and teams. We are in for a cracker of a weekend, with some high quality skills being expected on the turf. I would like to officially wish all teams, coaches and umpires the very best of luck for the big weekend!”

Umpires who have been invited to officiate are Angelique Kellerman; Ansie Joubert; Grant Bowles; Nuduzo Martin Mchunu; Sibu Ndlovu; Marie-Lee Visser; Michelle Cogle; Nonhlanhla Shezi; Pam Daniel and Xolani Majola.

The first game is St Mary’s vs Grantleigh, followed by two out of towners with King Edward High School taking on newcomers, Sarel Cilliers High School.

St Mary’s DSG and Thomas More College: Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 July

Durban Girls’ College made it three in a row as they claimed the title for the 2015 SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament in convincing fashion at St Mary’s DSG on the weekend.

College met Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High in the gold/silver final where the defending champions hammered in four goals, making it an impressive consecutive trio of golds in the five years of the tournament. Girls’ High entered the medal game as the “in-form” team but nerves seemed to get the better of them.

The tall, impressive forward Teagan McFall playing for College proved to be a slippery customer for the Girls’ High back line as she managed to shake the defence off and score two spectacular goals. The second shot, a reverse stick sweep, rocketed into the top corner of GHS’s net.

Captain for College, Kelsey Scott said, “We have been working hard for a while in preparation for the SPAR tournament. It was a bit of a shock to us where we drew in two of our pool games but that only made us more determined for today. We were extremely focused and pulled together to work as a solid unit when it counted against Girls’ High.”

The road to the 2015 finals for College had a bit of a bumpy start with a 1 all draw against a young and spirited King Edward High School team. And then in a classic Durban derby against rivals St Mary’s DSG in their second last pool game ended in a 2 all draw in a highly competitive, riveting game in the pouring rain at Thomas More College. 

The team from Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High were the most consistent out of all the competitors with five games played, 14 goals scored and no goals conceded. In their semi-final against home team, St Mary’s DSG, Girls’ High Katie Corf slotted the goal that counted in a game dominated by the visitors.

Lead by SA Women’s Indoor Hockey star, Taryn de Winnaar, Girls’ High resumed their unfortunate streak of always being the bridesmaid and never the bride, being awarded their fifth medal in the five years of the tournament.  This is their third silver they have won, to add to that they have two bronzes in their trophy cabinet.

MD for SPAR, Rob Philipson stated, “The welcomed torrential rain did not dampen the spirits of all the teams who took part. In freezing conditions, the girls took to the pitch with smiles on their faces as they valiantly represented their schools and their regions. It was heartening to see the eagerness that each of the teams displayed as they tackled each game during the tournament. Congratulations to each and every one of them.”

For the third position, it was a battle of the Saints with St Anne’s College managing to get two goals beating St Mary’s DSG in a hard fought game for the bronze. Both these teams have won previously and both team had similar results leading up to the bronze medal game.

Tournament Director, Les Galloway said, “Our tournament just keeps getting better and better. We really acknowledge the effort and energy that all the players put into their games to make this final weekend a success. We also acknowledge and thank all the coaches and managers who stand on the side-lines, endlessly supporting and guiding their teams, the superb commitment of the umpires, and the parents who spend countless hours making it possible for their girls to play.”

The top ten girls’ first teams from around KZN converge in Kloof in the grand finals of the 2015 SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament over the weekend of 25 and 26 July.

Twenty-nine games will be battled out at St Mary’s DSG and Thomas More College in the hunt to be the 2015 champion. The ten teams who have been victorious in their regionals around KZN will take each other on in the conclusion to this annual tournament now in its fifth year. Ten regionals have been played through the early part of this year, with the finalists from each region participating in the grand finals.

Favourites are the in-form teams from St Mary’s DSG and Durban Girls’ College that are just outside the top ten rankings in South Africa for girls’ first teams. Not far down the list are Pietermartizburg Girls’ High School and St Anne’s College.

Durban Girls’ College are the defending champions, having raised the trophy in the last two years. Promising to give them a run for their money are previous winners St Mary’s DSG and St Anne’s College.

Teams that will compete in the tournament are Ferrum Hoërskool from Newcastle; Amanzimtoti High School from the Durban South Regional; Ashton International College from the Durban North Regional; defending champions Durban Girls’ College from the Durban Central Regional; Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High and St Anne’s College from the Pietermaritzburg Central and Northern Regional; St Mary’s DSG from the Highway Regional; King Edward High School from the Southern KZN Regional; Empangeni High School from the Northern KZN Regional and Wartburg Kirchdorf High School from the Inland KZN Regional.

Another vital ingredient to this tournament is the growth of umpires. At each regional, one umpire was selected as the “Most Promising Umpire” and these have been invited to officiate at the grand finals.

The Most Promising Umpires are Ansie Joubert (St Dominic’s Academy) from the Northern KZN regional; Jason Naidoo (Kingsway High School) from the Durban South Regional; Ziyaana Booley (Northlands Girls High) from Durban North Regional; Pam Daniel (Durban Girls High School) Durban Central Regional; Craig Warren (Treverton) Pietermaritzburg Central Regional;  Bryn Merton (Grace College) Pietermaritzburg North Regional; Chiara Benati (St Mary’s DSG – making her second appearance) from the Highway Regional; Tessa Van Vuuren from the Southern KZN Regional who also is making her second appearance; Storm Blignaut (St.Catherine’s) Northern KZN Regional and Sarah Wheeler (Greytown High School) Inland Regional, who makes her fifth appearance.

“As with the actual game of hockey, a tournament of this size requires some great teamwork and good strategies to win.” says MD of SPAR Rob Philipson. “I would like to thank everyone involved - the tournament director, Les Galloway, the technical team, the schools, coaches, managers and teachers and the girls and their parents, who have worked together to create and develop this winning event. So successful has this model been, that other provinces are looking to emulate it.”

In fact this year, we were pleased to welcome Inanda Seminary, a school that has not played hockey in recent years, participate in the Durban Central regionals, giving some of the more experienced teams a good competitive match.”

Pool matches will be played on Saturday, July 25 from 08:30 at St Mary’s and Thomas More in Kloof.  On Sunday, July 26 the play-offs will start at 08:30 at St Mary’s.
