St Mary’s D.S.G. have done it again, claiming the Highway Regional title for the ninth time after a spectacular display at the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge at Curro Hillcrest on Sunday 9 May.

Throughout the day, Saints played a magnificent flowing and controlled game, dominating all of their games and knocking in 27 goals in their six games. In the regional final, they met host school, Curro Hillcrest, who played out of their boots in the round robin stages, earning themselves a berth against the defending champs. 

Heading into the final, both teams went head to head in their last round robin game. St Mary’s camped out for majority of the game in the Curro half, and peppered Curro’s keeper with wave after wave of attacks. Asanda Makhunga stood tall in the goals, denying Saints surges. Four fantastic goals did manage to sneak beyond Makhunga giving the visitors a 4-0 win in the game. 

In the final, Saints continued their relentless advances but Curro’s defenders held strong. The first charge at goal was 31 seconds into the game, two St Mary’s players drove downfield, with a powered pass gliding just out of reach of the support player running onto the ball, and rolling out of play. 

Nearing 4 minutes, Gemma Wood confidently strode into the Curro circle, stepping into a perfectly crafted reverse stick shot that flew into the net, giving Saints their first goal. Curro knuckled down, and with their sticks to the turf pushed back for over 8 minutes, not allowing any of the constant barrages through. In the period of Curro’s resistance, home team defender, Karla Roberts was a wizard with her stick on the baseline, magically stopping, not one but three rockets smacked in during three consecutive short corners. Roberts, situated on the baseline, quietly halted the balls flight, controlling and clearing it quickly out of the danger zone.

With the clock on 12 and a half minutes, Louisa Combrink hit the ball in for their sixth short corner, from the castle, they shifted play wide, with a quick tap pass finding Combrink who was now posted in front of goals. The wily player, finding a hole in the defense, slapped the ball in for St Mary’s second. 

Their third goal was also a set piece during a short corner. Combrink sent the ball to the castle, and again, they shifted the ball wide and then the ball moved into the centre of the circle, finding Dominque Carbonel who neatly pocketed in another goal. Concluding the game, the fourth goal pinballed around the circle until landing with Daniella De Oliveria who managed to gently tap in out of Makhunga’s reach.

Coach for St Mary’s Nolwazi ‘Chicken’ Nkabinde stated after the game, “It is really good to be back. We missed the action, and this tournament. My girls displayed fantastic skills today, something they can be proud of after the break. And we want to say thank you to our competitors, without them today would not have been possible. Well done to all for a brilliant day of hockey.”

Highway’s St Mary’s join Danville Park Girls High School from the Durban North Regional and Wembley College from Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional as regional winners.

This weekend the tournament heads to Richards Bay where Grantleigh hosts the North Coast Regional, and then back to Durban for the Durban Central Regional where Durban Girls High School hosts teams at their 3 Schools Trust.

A joyous performance by host school, Wembley College saw them winning the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Saturday 8 May.

Wembley College won the inaugural tournament in 2011 but have since not managed to top the podium. In the regional final they took on the 2019 Defending Champs, a young Wartburg Kirchdorf team. Wartburg who have dominated this region with six wins, were luckily to have advanced through to the regional final after a spectacular performance by Domino Servite on the turf, the Tech Officials did the counting for goal differences to see who would be the team to feature against Wembley.

At the whistle, Wembley showed their intention as they charged from the middle into Wartubrg territory. A revitalised and focused Wartburg then got into gear and turned over the play and took the game straight down to Wembley’s circle. 40 seconds into the game, and the umpire blew the first short corner, for Wartburg. Wartburg’s first attack was not successful, with the keeper booting out a soft attempt. Two minutes later, Wartburg had their second short corner, but again were unable to capitalise. 

Play pivoted Wembley’s way with a few chances up at the Wartburg goals, but a Wartburg solid defence, and missed Wembley opportunities meant the scoreline was still on zero each. Nearing ten minutes of play, a fast solo-break by Ncuthukazi Dlatu from Wartburg chasing towards the Wembley keeper, with only one player to beat, agonising watched as the ball got away from her and shot out of play over the line. 

The remainder of play bounced between the two teams 22s, with Wembley claiming more possession than Wartburg. Both teams were unable to net any of their chances in their opponent’s circles until Wembley desperately knocked the ball from close to the 22 and managed to find a Wartburg foot. As the clock ticked to zero, the umpire signalled a Wembley short corner. With pressure mounting, Wembley pushed the ball out to the top of the D and fired off a hurried flick that was easily defended and cleared. Full time with the scoreboard not having moved.

The game moved to a three-person penalty shootout. First to go was Dlatu for Wartburg who fired off her shot as soon as she set foot into the circle, with the ball whizzing past the right post not giving much work for Wembley’s keeper, Sinegugu ‘Sne’ Ngcobo. Next to go was Wembley’s Vice Captain, Leah Tedder who tried valiantly but was unable to shake Wartburg’s Marissa van der Spuy defence.  Wartburg’s Lise-Lea Engelbrecht was unable to bypass the brave charge of Ngcobo who determinedly booted the ball well out of play. Kristen Steyn kept her ball close to her as she advanced for Wembley, just managing to skirt around van der Spuy and with a tight angle tapped the ball into the Wartburg goal, giving her team the big break. Wartburg’s Khanya Mhlophe’s attempt went much the way of Dlatu, as she stepped into the circle, fired off a shot that was easily deflected by a waiting Ngcobo. 

“The girls came into the tournament with the desire to win today, and they did it. It is a really good feeling. And this is the first time since 2011, so makes it very special for us!” said a delighted Wembley coach, Gareth Larkan. 

Wembley earning the win, 1-0 and the Regional Title for the second time in the Take Two of the Milestone celebratory tenth year. They are the second team this year to be crowned, joining Danville Park Girls’ High School from the Durban North Regional. 

The highly contested Highway Regional followed the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional on Sunday at Curro Hillcrest where St Mary’s D.S.G. took the honours, with another five more regionals rolling out in May, and the final two taking place in early June.

Curro Hillcrest: Sunday 9 May

In the third of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, teams from around the Highway area will congregate at Curro Hillcrest on Sunday 9 May.

Host school, Curro Hillcrest will get the ball rolling in the first game of their tournament where they face Kloof High School. Joining them on the turf on the day are Hillcrest High School, St Mary’s DSG, Thomas More College and Westville Girls’ High School.

In one of the most competitive regions in KZN, the six teams will battle it out in the hopes of dethroning St Mary’s DSG who have had a stronghold raising the regional trophy on all but one occasion over the last nine years. Fifteen quick-fire games, with a duration of 20 minutes, will result in the two top teams meeting to conclude the round robin tournament.

Scoring points on the day, a win will earn a team 4 points, a draw with goals 2 points, a goalless draw only 1 point. In the final, if the game ends with a draw, three players from each team will head to the circle for a deciding 8 second penalty shoot-out.

Danville Park Girls’ HIgh from the Durban North Regional lifted the trophy victoriously in the first tournament in the milestone celebratory tenth year. Teams from the uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi Regional meet the day before the Highway Regional at Wembely College and then the remaining seven regionals roll out in quick succession around KZN in the next five weeks.

A victorious Danville Park Girls’ High School claimed their third title in the Durban North Regional of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge on Sunday (2 May) at Crawford La Lucia.

In the concluding game of the regional finals, they met local rival Our Lady of Fatima in a close final. Danville got out of the starting blocks eagerly taking the play up to Fatima’s 22 a few times but were not able to find holes in the Fatima defense. Five minutes into the game a chance shot was a result from a run up the left for Fatima but the attempt met the determined gloved hand of the Danville keeper, Chelsea Steyn. With Fatima now in Danville’s danger zone, a second attempt got close to goals but whizzed past with no blue stick able to punch it goal-wards.

Mid-way through the final, Paige Horn from Fatima burst free of her defender and had a blistering dash into the circle but was unable to capitliase.

Nearing the final whistle both teams dished out loads of turn over passes and both managed to intercept plenty of wayward passes. Danville managed an impressive passage of play up the left, with short sharp passes bouncing between open players but again they didn’t manage to penetrate the Fatima 22. 

Fatima’s response was a near fire by Sarah Bright who pounced on an opportunity on the line, right next to the post but was unable to avoid a diving Danville goalie. 

At the final whistle the score was level at nil nil, resulting in the game going to the deciding penalty shoot out. Danville was first up but Savanah Ferrier was unable to find the back of the net. Fatima’s Sarah Bright netted the first goal, taking her team 1 nil up. Danni Mumford from Danville then comfortably equalized. Horn was the second player for Fatima and dragged the ball left falling to her favourite reverse stick, slotting the ball in neatly for Fatima’s 2nd goal. Sian Davies leveled the scores with a no-nonsense slap sending the ball into the right corner of the box. With the pressure mounting, Chelsea Peterson from Fatima faded to her left, and released a superb reverse stick shot that flew wide of the goals. 

In sudden death, Horn went first for Fatima with her attempt running right this time getting smothered by the Danville keeper, resulting in a re-take. Horn then switched her attack and glided in to the circle, veering left and taking to her reverse stick shot that skidded unsuccessfully past the upright. Davies, in almost a repeat of her first attempt, cruised into the circle and sent the ball in to the right corner again for her second goal and earning her team the title.

Coach for Danville Park Girls’ High School, Calvin Price said after the game, “It is so good to be back. The objective of course is to win and today the luck went our way. One on ones are not our best but we managed to score when needed. The girls played so well the entire day and I am so proud of them with their win. And on behalf of our girls, I would like to say a big thank you to SPAR and Tournament Director Les Galloway for getting the tournament back on track this year.”

This coming weekend sees the tournament gather momentum for its second and third regional taking place. The first on Saturday 8 May at Wembley College for the uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi Regional and then the Highway Regional taking place on Sunday 9 May at Curro Hillcrest.

SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge Take Two of the Tenth Year

The hugely popular SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge is back on track this year, with a take two of their milestone tenth year. 

Having only progressed halfway through the fixtures last year, before CoViD paused play in the tournament’s celebratory year, it will be extremely exciting for the girls to get back onto the turf. It is full steam ahead for the annual girls’ hockey tournament with the ten regional tournaments rolling out in a quick-fire six weekends. 

The month of May is choc-a-block full of action with eight of the regionals taking place. Tipping off the season, Crawford La Lucia hosts the Durban North Regional on Sunday 2 May. The second tournament travels inland to Wembley College in Greytown for the uMvoti, uThukela and uMzinyathi Regional on Saturday 8 May. Curro Hillcrest will see teams from the Highway area taking to their turf on Sunday 9 May. 

The fourth tournament heads up to Richards Bay for the KZN Northern Coastal Regional with Grantleigh hosting on Saturday 15 May. Back in Durban, the fifth tournament heads to the newly laid turf at Durban Girls’ High School’s Three Schools Trust for the Durban Central Regional on Sunday 16 May.  The following weekend, the action moves inland again, this time to Newcastle to play on the brand new astro at Ferrum High School on Saturday 22 May. 

The last two tournaments in May are a double-header in Hilton on Saturday 29. St Anne’s College welcomes teams participating in both the Pietermaritzburg Northern Regional and Pietermaritzburg Central Regional.

Kingsway High School will host the ninth challenge at the Three Schools Trust for the Durban South Regional on Sunday 6 June. Rounding off the 2021 season, King Edward High School will host the tenth and final regional on Sunday 12 June hosting teams from the Southern KZN 

The only difference in this year’s fixtures is the absence of the much-loved and highly anticipated Grand Finals. It will be back in all its grandeur next year. 

Tournament Director, Les Galloway from Schoolgirl Sport said, “We have really missed the action. It has been just over a year since the curtain came down on us, and I cannot wait to see the girls back on the pitch enjoying these wonderful SPAR tournaments.”

Making a welcome return, Varsity College continues their phenomenal support of girls’ hockey. Varsity College Scouts will be on the lookout at all of the tournaments for any shining stars, in the hopes of offering them a bursary.

All CoViD protocols will be in place to ensure the safety of all participating. And due to current CoViD regulations and protocols, no spectators will be allowed.

On Saturday 14 March, two more teams earned places at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge. First to secure their place was host school, St Anne’s College who were victorious in the Pietermaritzburg Northern Regional followed by Epworth School in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional.

In a repeat of their round robin clash, St Anne’s met Howick High School in a 7-nil victory for the Pietermaritzburg North title. The two teams faced each other in their first game of their regionals. Howick High then knuckled down and dusted off their loss, going up against Voortrekker High School and Grace College. 

Howick ran out of steam after playing a pearler against one-time winner, The Wykeham Collegiate in the last game of the round robin. Howick defended like pros letting in an early Wykeham goal, midway through the round robin game, they had an opportunity down the other side which they made sure they knocked in to equalize. The remainder of the game they held strong, not allowing Wykeham any space giving them a chance to have a run in the final against St Anne’s.

St Anne’s opened their account with a spin and slot in from Lusanda Mtshali, who netted the first with less than 2 minutes on the clock. Racking up the goals after Mtshali started the ball rolling, Gabbi Benkenstein scored two, Storm Veenstra added one to her teams tally and Georgie Romer-Lee knocked in a magnificent hat-trick of goals.

In the Central Regional, Epworth kept a clean sheet in their six games. The second team to make it to the regional final was decided on goal difference. Both Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High and St John’s D.S.G. had near-mirror image results. With wins for both against Russel High School, Alexandra High School and Carter High School. Both went down to Epworth 1 nil and drew nil nil in the game against each other. The goal difference was the decider with Girls’ High netting a total of 21 goals and St John’s 20.

In the second Epworth Girls’ High game, Epworth owned the territory with 90% of play taking place in the Girls’ High half. Epworth persevered with their attacks throughout the twenty minutes but the last line of defence, keeper Manelisi Gwala was defiant. Deflecting missiled flicks from short corners, warding away rockets with magnificent soccer skills, she held strong.

In a last gasp attack, Epworth’s Fia de Bruyn hugged the post as she deflected the ball from a determined pass from the right. On the whistle, Epworth managed to win the game and the regional title for the third time. The defending champs reactions were electric amid a brewing electric storm above.

Two umpires were acknowledged for their determined efforts with the whistle throughout the day, Solulwe Bless from the Central Regional and Lorimer O’Bree from Howick High for North Regional.

St Anne’s College plays host to the upcoming SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge this coming weekend whereby both the Pietermaritzburg Central and Northern Regionals will be played on their two astro turfs.

With home turf advantage, host school St Anne’s College will hope that they can continue their dominance in the Pietermaritzburg Northern Regional. They will take on Howick High School, Treverton, Grace College, Voortrekker High School and The Wykeham Collegiate. The games will all be 25 minutes one way running time. 

Across the way defending champions, Epworth School will be keen to take their third title in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional. They will meet Alexander High, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School, St John’s D.S.G., Maritzburg Christian School and Carter High School. The games will be 20 minutes one way running time.

Both regionals will have a round robin format. The Pietermaritzburg Northern’s top two teams will face each other on in their regional final at 2.40pm. Ten minutes later the top two teams will take to their turf to duel it out for the honours in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional.

Only two teams have represented the northern region of Pietermaritzburg at the Grand Finals. St Anne’s have raised the trophy eight times and The Wykeham Collegiate had their name engraved on the trophy in 2012. Three teams have travelled to Durban in July. Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High dominated the area for six times, with St John’s winning once, and Epworth hunting their third title this weekend. 

Both tournaments will award 4 points for a win, a draw with goals will earn 2 points and a goalless draw only 1 point. A loss will be logged as zero points for the losing team.

The two teams to win will join three teams that have already earned a spot at the Grand Finals that will take place in July at St Marys DSG. The first team to secure a spot is newcomers from Vryheid, Hoërskool Pionier from the Northern KZN Regional. Second team that will make an appearance at the Grand Finals for a tenth time is Durban Girls’ College representing the Durban Central Regional. The third team, back again after a year’s gap is Our Lady of Fatima from the Durban North Regional.

Reclaiming the title, Our Lady of Fatima were victorious for the fourth time in the Durban North Regional of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge at Ashton International College on Sunday 8 March.

In a scorcher of a game, Fatima met Crawford La Lucia in the regional final, their second meeting of the day. In the previous encounter the result went Crawford’s way with a 1 nil victory but in the main game of the day, Fatima dug deep and after a tough encounter were triumphant.

In a fast, flowing game, Crawford La Lucia managed to open their account with a sterling charge in from Laiken Brisset with just over 5 minutes left to play. Brisset wasted no time as she entered the top of the circle and quickly rocketed in her attempt that flew past the keeper. Fatima didn’t let the late score get to them, and pushed hard at the Crawford defence. Their perseverance paid off as Emma Loftstedt found some space in a last gasp surge with just over 90 seconds left of play. She skilfully chipped the ball in, levelling the score at 1 all.

As the time ran out, 3 players from each side lined up for the deciding penalty shoot out. First to go was the 2019 defending champs, Crawford La Lucia – Alison Beck set off. Charging down Beck’s attempt was the young keeper Hannah Donkin, who deflected the ball out of reach. Fatima’s Caitlin Cotterell made a dash goal-wards, steering right and slotting in her shot neatly. In the second round, both Teneal Moriarty from Crawford and Paige Horn from Fatima veered right as they got into the circle and knocked in their strokes. The scoreboard was now 3-2 to Fatima. Brisset set off for the final round, weaving in both directions as she charged towards the goals but Donkin paid attention to the fancy footwork and stifled Brisset’s chance to keep Crawford in the game.

In the bronze medal game, Danville Park Girls’ High met the surprise dynamite package from Curro Mount Richmore. In their first appearance at the Durban North Regional, Curro held strong as Danville pounded down to the Curro goals with five Danville penalty corners being defended by the newcomers. With only a handful of minutes left, a shock shot hit the post and landed in free space in the circle. An alert Tayla Jansen pounced on the opportunity and netted her teams first and only goal, earning a third for Danville.

In the first semi-final, Crawford La Lucia took on Curro Mount Richmore and dominated the game, winning the game 4 nil. In the second semi-final, Danville – who had topped the pool log took on Fatima. Fatima managed to edge ahead with a run down the left, running along the baseline and finding the back of the box in the only goal in their semi. Both teams played superbly with some fierce duels mid-field seeing loads of long passes, plenty of turn-overs and not a lot of chances on either end of the field.

Umpire of the Day went to Danville Park High School’s Christy Gilmour.

Fatima is the third team to have a run at the Grand Finals in the tenth year of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge. In their three previous Grand Finals appearances, they have earned a respectable fifth place in 2011, 2017 and 2018. They join newcomers Hoërskool Pionier from the Northern KZN Regional and the only team with a 100% record at the epic conclusion of this tournament, Durban Girls’ College will be representing the Durban Central Regional. Next weekend two teams will earn their spots representing the Pietermaritzburg Central and Northern Regionals.

Maintaining their 100% record, Durban Girls College was crowned the Durban Central Regional winners of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge for the tenth time on Saturday 7 March.

College is the only team in the tournament to have a 100% appearance at the Grand Finals, which takes place later this year at St Mary’s DSG. College has an illustrious history in the ten years of the SPAR tournament notching up three golds, three silvers, a bronze and two fourths in their ten runs at the Grand Finals.

The victorious defending champs were made to work for their success in the regional final, meeting the lioness Durban Girls’ High School team. It was the second time the two teams met each other at the regional, with the first meeting going College’s way with only a solitary goal scored by Olivia Sharratt for the host school. Durban Girls’ High School’s defence stood solid only allowing 2 goals in with a barrage of attempts. Led by Girls’ High’s keeper, Nkazi Cele who commanded her troops tirelessly from the back. The first was on a back-to-back short corner, with the clock ticking past 2 and a half minutes played. The first short corner was awarded, with a heroic charge down by Girls’ High giving College another shortie attempt. The ball got pushed to the castle and Jenna Stichelbout’s shot deflected twice before slotting neatly into the goals.

Their second goal went in near mid-time. Livewire, Bulelwa ‘BB’ Mzimela pierced Girls’ High School’s circle and quickly passed the ball to a perfectly placed Amanda Holmes who easily tapped the ball across the line, giving her team a 2 nil advantage.

With endless surging into the DGHS circle, the visiting team managed to turn the game around and get into College’s circle as the clock ticked down with 2 and a half minutes remaining. The strong College back line didn’t allow the last minute breaks to amount to anything.

Leading up to the final College defeated St Henry’s. Early in the game, College earned a short corner and capitalized with a low flick finding the back of the box in the only goal in the first semi-final. In the second semi-final Girls’ High took on a determined Maris Stella. In a level pegged game, the score was nil nil. The game rolled into a penalty shoot-out, which Girls’ High secured in their third round. Scores remained unmoved for the first 5 attempts taken by both teams, but a determined run in by Tameka Pillay, followed by a quick release saw her shot fly into the net and earning an opportunity to dethrone Girls’ College.

In the bronze game between St Henry’s and Maris Stella. The game ping-ponged between the two 22s. The first time a team got into a circle, 7 minutes of play had ticked away. St Henry’s were the first team to take a crack at the goals after 12 minutes of play. A minute later Maris Stella had their first shot on the opposite end, with their chance being halted by a diving keeper.

With just over 3 minutes left, play was sent down the right with a number of crisp, sharp passes finding Sarah Proctor camped out mid-circle. Proctor calmly cashed in directing the pass neatly into the St Henry’s box scoring the game winning goal and securing third place for Maris Stella.

Umpire of the Day was awarded to the young Melissa Calitz from St Henry's.

College is the second team to secure a spot at the Grand Finals, first to earn a place are newcomers Hoerskool Pionier from Northern KZN. On Sunday Our Lady of Fatima from Durban North Regional were the third team to gain a berth at the Grand Finals that will take place at St Mary’s DSG in July.

St Anne’s College earned themselves a successful second place in SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge

In their eighth appearance at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, St Anne’s College earned themselves a successful second place.

In a repeat of last year, St Anne’s earned themselves silver against St Mary’s DSG in a highly competitive end to the Grand Finals. In their second consecutive medal meeting, St Anne’s lost by the narrowest of margins, one spectacular St Mary’s drag flick that found the back of the net was the only goal in this year’s gold silver game. St Anne’s held strong compared to the 2018 final where they went down by 3 goals in a game that the host school dominated.

Robin Jones, passionate Coach for St Anne’s stated, “Our weekend started off slow but we are very grateful to be back at such a wonderful event. We had quite a few players missing due to top school squash commitments which resulted in a nice opportunity to give some of our younger girls a chance to play and I am extremely proud of them.”

“We are incredibly happy to be at this event, it is a wonderful initiative. It is wonderful to be back and of course making it to the final. I believe we competed more in this year’s medal match than last years. With only one special goal by a special player separating the two teams. The standard was fantastic in the gamed and we can only grow from strength to strength as a school, and as a province because of events like this.”

The Hilton based team were drawn in Pool B where they met Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central Regional Winner), Crawford La Lucia (DBN North Regional Winners), Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South Regional Winners) and Felixton College from Richards Bay (North Coast Regional).

In their first game, St Anne’s secured a gentle win of 1 nil against Felixton, building on this they went 2 nil up against Crawford. In their big game against three times tournament winners, Durban Girls’ College, St Anne’s earned themselves a respectable 1 all draw. Ending off their first day, they pounced on every opportunity netting 6 fantastic goals dominating from start to finish in their last pool game against Toti.

Finishing on top of the log, day two started off with a meeting in the first semi-final against Epworth School who finished second in their pool. Sophie Rebeck and Lusanda Mtshali notched up two goals for their team, giving St Anne’s the grand ticket to the gold silver medal game.

In their ninth appearance at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, Durban Girls’ College finished third overall.

In their pool, College came up against St Anne’s College (PMB North Regional Winners), Crawford La Lucia (DBN North Regional Winners), Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South Regional Winners) and Richards Bay’s Felixton College (North Coastal Regional Winner).

College took on Crawford in the first game, starting off their weekend with a 1 nil win. They continued their winning streak with a 4 nil win against Toti. In their big test in the pool games, they came up level pegged at one all against St Anne’s and finished off their first day with a 1 nil win against travelling team, Felixton.

Ending off second in Pool B, they took on host school and defending champs, St Mary’s DSG in a fast flying semi-final that went the way of Saints who took the game 3 nil.

In the bronze medal game, Durban Girls’ College met Epworth School for the second year running at the Grand Finals. With ten minutes left Grade 11 star, Bulelwa Mzimela was perfectly in place for a fantastic base line run and a quick fire pass up to Mzimela waiting on the P, who confidently tapped in her shot to take the win for the local team.

After the game, Vice Captain for College, Emma Sharratt shared, “It was nice to get one back after loosing to Epworth last year.”

Adding to Sharratt’s sentiments, Kerry Lee Gaze, Coach for College said, “Great hockey, it was a competitive weekend and we ended against a competitive team in Epworth. It was fantastic all round!”

Durban Girls’ College improved on their 2018 placing and added their first bronze medal to their stats in their history at the tournament. They are the only team to have played all nine Grand Finals and have an impressive three golds, three silvers, two fourths and now a bronze medal.

In their second Grand Finals appearance at the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, Epworth School finished fourth overall.

Representing the PMB Central Region, the team were drawn in Pool A where they took on St Mary’s DSG (Highway Regional Winners), Kokstad High School (Southern KZN Regional Winners), Ferrum High School (Northern KZN Regional Winners) and Wartburg Kirchdorf School (Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional Winners).

In their first game, they went 2 nil up against travelling team Kokstad College followed by 6 nil victory against Newcastle’s Ferrum. In Epworth’s third pool game they went 2 nil up against midland’s team Wartburg. In their final pool game they met defending champs, St Mary’s in a tough conclusion to their fabulous first day where they went down 2 nil.

Epworth’s day two of the tournament started in a Pietermaritzburg derby where they took on St Anne’s College in the first semi final. It was not to be Epworth’s time with St Anne’s Sophie Rebeck and Lusanda Mtshali netting two goals for their Hilton based team.

In the bronze medal game, Durban Girls’ College met Epworth School for the second year running at the Grand Finals. Coach, Hayley Coombes enthused, “The weekend has been absolutely incredible. And SPAR - wow – thank you for reviving schoolgirls’ hockey. A tournament like this is something to look forward to and during the season we have worked hard for it. If this tournament wasn’t around, I don’t think it would make our season as exciting as it has been and what they put on for a weekend like this is just phenomenal. Since the regionals, we have been building up to this weekend so simply - thank you.”

Chatting about the bronze medal game, Coombes continued, “We haven’t played DGC this season so it always nice to play someone fresh. I think some very good hockey was played between the two schools, some exceptional individual play and some fantastic team play. It is never easy to lose but we have huge respect for DGC. We were thrilled to be in the bronze match and we will be back next year hopefully.”

In their first appearance, Crawford La Lucia representing the Durban North Region at the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge finished a fantastic fifth overall.

The newcomers were drawn in Pool B where they took on top teams Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central Regional Winners) and St Anne’s College (PMB North Regional Winners) as well as travelling teams Felixton College from Richards Bay (North Coastal Regional Winners) and Wartburg Kirchdorf School (Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional Winners).

Having a challenging start to their first Grand Finals, in their first pool game on Saturday, Crawford went down by only one goal against Durban Girls’ College and lost by a narrow 2 goal margin against St Anne’s in their second pool game. The Durban North team went 2 nil up against Felixton in their third game and finished with another 2 nil victory against Toti.

In the cross pool playoff, Crawford met Newcastle’s Ferrum High School (Northern KZN Regional Winners) and yet again netted two goals for their third win which advanced them to the fifth place positional game. Here they met Kokstad College in a feisty fifth-placed final. Jess Brown netted two for her team and Georgia Vorster added in one giving their team a well crafted 3 nil victory and memorable start to their Grand Final stats.

Representing the Southern KZN Region, Kokstad came up against defending champs, St Mary’s DSG (Highway Regional Winners), Epworth School (PMB Central Regional Winners) and travelling teams Ferrrum High School from Newcastle (Northern KZN Regional Winners) and Wartburg Kirchdorf School (Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional Winners).

Kokstad had a challenging start to their Grand Finals meeting Epworth in their first game and going down 2 nil followed by a 3 nil lose to St Mary’s. In their third game, they managed to get their first goal in with a 1 nil win against Wartburg. In their final pool game on Saturday they took on Newcastle’s Ferrum where the score was level pegged with a 1 all draw after the final whistle.

On Sunday, in the cross pool playoff they took on fourth in Pool B, Felixton College. After full time the score was level with no goals finding the back of the box. In the only penalty shootout of the tournament, Felixton took the first round, 1 nil. In the second round both Kokstad and Felixton netted their shots so the score was 2-1 to Felixton. Kokstad luckily levelled the score in the third round and Felixton were not able to build on their advantage and missed their third penalty meaning the scoreline was level on 2 each after three attempts.

The game’s result moved to a sudden death scenario with Felixton taking the first run and charging into the D, moving the ball left trying to round the keeper and rolling the ball agonisingly over the baseline. Kokstad took to the spot and calmly scored their team’s third and winning goal.

In their final placing game, they took on Crawford La Lucia in the fifth and sixth positional placing games. Crawford La Lucia were on song finding the back of the box three times and claiming fifth, with Kokstad earning a splendid sixth overall.

Felixton College - takes a seventh at Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge.

In their second appearance, Felixton College improved considerably on their first results at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge.

Felixton met top teams Durban Girls’ College (DBN Central Regional Winners) and St Anne’s College (PMB North Regional Winners), together with Crawford La Lucia (DBN North Regional Winners) and Amanzimtoti High School (DBN South Regional Winners) in their pool games on Saturday. Starting off with a fantastic scoreline in a well fought game where they went 1 nil down against one times tournament winner’s St Anne’s from Hilton. In their second game they took on Amanzimtoti where they went 1 nil up where Cate Oxley netted her team’s first goal. Meeting Crawford La Lucia, Felixton let two goals slip past them ahead of yet another fantastic result in their last pool game, where they only let one goal go in against three times tournament winners, Durban Girls’ College.

Coach for Felixton College, Marilise Kietzmann shared after the tournament, “I feel that overall we played really good hockey. We were in a tough pool and being a small school I believe that we definitely held our own.”

“We fought hard and were unlucky to lose our playoff game in a penalty shootout. The girls thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the tournament is a wonderful opportunity to be able to play against schools that we don’t have regular fixtures against. We look forward to hopefully being back next year.”

Felixton met Ferrum High School, winners of the Northern KZN Regional in the seventh position playoff where Josie Picton earned her team seventh place, two places higher than their first Grand Finals appearance of ninth last year.

In their eighth appearance Ferrrum High School finished eighth overall at the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge.

In their pool they met defending champions, St Mary’s DSG (Highway Regional Winners), Epworth School (PMB Central Regional Winners), and teams that also travelled to the tournament – Wartburg Kirchdorf School (Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional Winners) and Kokstad College (Southern KZN Regional Winners).

In their first game of the tournament, they took on Wartburg where at the end of full time the score was 1 all. In their second game against Epworth, Ferrum battled to get the attack out of the circle as the Pietermaritzburg school dominated, slotting in 6 goals. In a riveting match against the defending champions, Ferrum pulled a rabbit out of the hat by scoring a surprise goal mid game and drawing first blood. For agonizing minutes Ferrum held strong as St Mary’s tried to get off their back foot and try to break the Ferrum defence. The host school netted four quick fire goals as the clock wound down to the end of the game, with the final score being 4-1 to the champs. In the last pool game Ferrum went up against Kokstad, and finishing their day as they started, the game ended level with both teams scoring one goal.

On Sunday, in the very first cross pool playoff, they met Crawford La Lucia who didn’t wait long to find the back of the net. At the end of full time, Crawford had managed to score 2 goals, sending Kokstad into the final playoff for position seven and eight. Here they met Richards Bay’s Felixton College. Felixton managed to go 1 nil up and then defend their score, with the whistle blowing and snaffling the seventh place, meaning Kokstad would have to settle of eighth overall.

In their sixth appearance at the Grand Finals of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, Wartburg Kirchdorf School ended ninth overall in the KZN tournament.

After missing last year, the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Regional Winners came up against some serious opposition in their pool games on the first day. They were drafted in the same pool as defending champions, St Mary’s DSG (Highway Regional Winners), 2018 bronze medalists Epworth School (PMB Central Regional Winners) and travelling teams Ferrum High School from Newcaslte (Northern KZN Regional Winners) and Kokstad College (Southern KZN Regional Winners).

After a crushing start to their weekend, going down 6 nil against the defending champs, St Mary’s – the young team featuring no matric pupils drew their second game 1 all against Ferrum. Kokstad managed to get one up against the usually tight defence. In their last pool game, Wartburg took another knock with a 2 nil lose against eventual fourth placed Epworth.

Coach for Wartburg, Lisa Misselhorn enthused, “We are so thrilled to be back at the Grand Finals. It was an amazing, challenging and fun weekend with great team work and commitment. Spirits were high and everyone enjoyed the fantastic standard of hockey.”

In the cross pool playoff, Wartburg took on the south coast school, Amanzimtoti High School representing the Durban South Region. With efficient German tactics, the travelling team managed to get one goal finishing ninth overall.

Continuing, Misselhorn shared, “Overall we are incredibly content with our position as a young, up-and-coming team from a small and amazing school. Thank you to all sponsors and organisers and we look forward to the tenth year of this wonderful tournament.”

Toti finishes eighth overall in SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge Grand Finals

In their fifth appearance, Amanzimtoti High School finished tenth overall at the 99th overall tournament of the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge.

Representing the Durban South Region, Toti met hockey giants Durban Girls’ College (Durban Central Regional Winners), St Anne’s College (PMB North Regional Winners), along with Crawford La Lucia (DBN North Regional Winners) and travelling team Felixton College (North Coastal Regional Winners) from Richard’s Bay.

In their first game the went down 1-0 against Richards Bay’s team Felixton. In their second game, they had four goals go in by Durban Girls’ College. In their third pool game, they lost 2 nil and had six goals scored in against eventual silver medalists St Anne’s in the last pool game on Saturday.

First team coach for Toti, Chris Clarke stated, “It was a very tough weekend for my girls. We were placed in an extremely tough group and my young team battled to match the pace of the other teams.”

In the cross pool playoff, Toti took on the German midlands school, Wartburg Kirchdorf School representing the Umvoti, uThukela and Umzinyathi Region. With efficient German tactics, the travelling team managed to get one goal in to earn ninth and Amanzimtoti finishing tenth overall.

Clarke concluded, “The weekend was a lovely learning experience for my girls and we will look forward to being back and better next year.”

Namibian Kiana Cormack netted a cracker of a goal that earned her team, St Mary’s DSG, the title of the 2019 SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge for the fifth time in a 1 nil win against St Anne’s College.

With just over 12 minutes in the second half remaining, Captain Cormack of the host school was lurking at the top of the castle ready to pounce on the injection of the second short corner of the game. After a clean stop the captain swung into action, firing in a tournament winning drag flick that rocketed into the top right hand corner beyond the out stretched gloves of St Anne’s keeper, Ella Thorburn.

A jubilant captain explained, “I don’t usually score drag flicks so this is the first tournament where I actually pulled it off. I wasn’t expecting it, nobody was but it felt right from the moment I released it and it was a phenomenal feeling watching it go.”

“We went out there knowing it was going to be a tough game – they always are against St Anne’s but it actually was a lot of fun, exciting and intense. For both teams there was some amazing moments of hockey and I don’t think any of us really knew we would take the win today!”

St Mary’s dominated most of the gold medal game, with St Anne’s getting a few runs down to the other end when they had space. In the first half a surge saw St Anne’s hitting the left upright with a drag flick attempt in the first five minutes of the game. In a last gasp attempt, Lusanda Mtshali broke away mid field, striding towards the circle. On the very tip of the circle, her charge was agonizingly stopped by a St Mary’s defender’s foot, the whistle blowing with 3 seconds on the clock. As the offence happened outside the circle, Mtshali’s valiant effort fell centimeters short from an extra time short corner.

In the bronze medal game, Durban Girls’ College met Epworth School for the second year running at the Grand Finals. Only ten minutes were left when Grade 11 star, Bulelwa Mzimela was perfectly in place for a fantastic base line run and a quick fire pass up to Mzimela waiting on the P who confidently tapped in her shot to take the win for the local team. College added to their impressive history in this tournament, notching up their first third this year after nine Grand Final appearances. Their name appears on the trophy three times and they also have three silvers and two fourths from previous years.

In the first semi final, St Anne’s met Epworth for an all round Maritzburg game. Sophie Rebeck and Lusanda Mtshali scored for St Anne’s giving them a 2 nil victory giving them their third opportunity in the main game at the Grand Finals. In the inaugural tournament in 2011, they earned themselves gold with a silver in last year’s tournament.

In the second semi final, St Mary’s took on local rival, Durban Girls’ College. College held off St Mary’s for most of the first half but in the final minute Cerian Fourie netted her team’s first. Cormack advanced the scoring to 2 nil and Fourie got her second of the game to take the game away from College with the final score of 3 nil.

After two days of diverse weather at the 99th overall KZN tournament, 29 games were played with a total of 72 goals being scored in 710 minutes of passionate first team schoolgirls’ hockey at its finest. The first tournament in 2020 rolls the tournament counter over to the milestone of 100.

The sixth regional in the SPAR KZN Schoolgirls’ Hockey Challenge, the Southern KZN, heads to Creston College on Saturday 13 April.

Geographically, this is one of the biggest regionals, with six teams travelling from Scottburgh, Kokstad, Matatiele and iXopo joining four local south coast teams to participate in a spectacular ‘hockey-filled’ day.

The teams are host school Creston College, Kokstad College, Scottburgh High School, St Patrick’s College and Suid-Natal High School in Pool A and iXopo High School, King Edward High School, Port Shepstone High School, Southcity Christian School and St Monica’s High School.

This region has turned out three winners over its nine year history. The first team to ‘don’ the Southern KZN regional title was the feisty team from inland, Kokstad College, with two appearances in the 2011 and 2014 Grand Finals. They earned themselves a seventh and eighth spot overall out of the ten regions. Host school, Creston College has also represented the region twice in back-to-back appearances in 2012 and 2013. Creston ended up with a sixth spot in their first Grand Final and a fifth in their second.

Travelling the farthest is the gutsy team from King Edward High School in Matatiele. For the last four consecutive years, this team has topped the log. Faring well at the Grand Finals they have an eighth, two sixth places and a seventh in last year’s Grand Final.

The two ladies heading up the King Edward team, Coach and Manager Lizel du Randt and new Coach Tarryn McArthur said, “Our KEHS girls have an unbelievably positive, upbeat spirit this year. Our girls know that when their legs run out, they play with their hearts and this year we have loads of heart.”

The action will be split over two fields, with the first games seeing Creston going up against Scottburgh High, and on the second field Southcity taking on travelling team iXopo. Once all the pool games are complete, the semi finals will get underway, followed by positional games and the gold / silver game capping off a full day of hockey.

The winner of the Southern KZN Regional will join teams from around KZN at the Grand Finals taking place at St Mary’s DSG in Kloof on 20 and 21 July.

The regional winner will join other teams that have already got a ticket to the Grand Finals.
